Greening the Grid through Demand-Side Automation

For decades, grid operators have relied on generators to balance electricity supply and demand. With increasing deployment of intermittent renewables like wind and solar, there is both a greater need and opportunity for the use of internet-accessible smart technologies to match electricity demand with available supply—and potentially provide other services to the grid. Realizing fuller demand-side flexibility requires advances in engineering, consumer acceptance, regulatory practices related to pricing, data access, and potentially new business models.

On April 4, 2022, Resources for the Future (RFF) hosted an RFF Live event reviewing recent research and regulatory developments, as well as on-the-ground experiences. Our panel, featuring experts from across academia, policy, and industry, discussed the various challenges and opportunities of using automation and pricing to help "green" the grid.
